Songs Without A Purpose
Songs Without A Purpose
In 2007 Johnny Parry released “Songs Without A Purpose”, an incredible album which built upon the tonal experimentation of his previous work to deliver a dark, brooding soundscape. Johnny toured the album extensively around the UK and Western Europe, to critical acclaim – utilising synchronised video to provide an incredible, involving performance.
The album opens with the dark “If I was a killer” which alternates between sparse piano with Johnny whispering in your ear, and the soaring melody of the chorus which leaves one wondering: what exactly did July do to upset him. “Sweet Nothings” who’s soundscape repeatedly expands as the track progresses, the snare drum driving the song along and paired [live] with great visuals is guaranteed to make you feel like you’re in the finale of a Hollywood film, driving off along an endless highway into the desert as the sunsets.
Once again, new “Little Prayers” make a reappearance, No. 5 making use of Johnny’s hallmarks: strong rhythm, soaring Soprano and beautiful violin melody. The album closes with “A Love Song”, a phenomenal pop ballad, but one which needs to be seen live to experience it at its best; leveraging video to carefully compliment the lyrics, no audience has been able to watch without smiling or chuckling.
