Just a year after releasing the soaring orchestral “Songs Without a Purpose”, Johnny Parry released a short EP, brining together the first 8 of his “Little Prayers” tracks, reworked and arranged in a smaller and more intimate form.
Whilst the arrangements were smaller, the vision remained clear, to produce a cohesive album of tracks which leveraged the sound of the Johnny Parry Trio but brought in orchestral elements more sparingly. “Hospital Walls” shows this to great effect, starting as a simple piano lead 3 piece ensemble, but growing to a crescendo, supported by a soundscape of scratchy guitar, male voice choir chanting and oppressive organ.
The EP is filled with delicate touches, from the pleading lyrics of “Here” set to music box style piano, the rich organ sound of “Autumn” contrasted with an off-beat snare to the closing track “Ships”, a face paced song with intiguing lyrics which, at points, offer unique insights into the songwriting process.
